Leading TAs for Maximum Input: strategic and effective use of TAs in school.

Background

The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) is an independent charity established in 2011, dedicated to breaking the link between family background and educational achievement. In March 2015, the EEF launched a campaign to improve the impact of Teaching Assistants in English schools. This marks a new phase of activity for the EEF, one that is focused on communicating the key messages emerging from research and helping schools act on the evidence. They have recently produced evidence-based guidance to help schools make the best use of teaching assistants. The guidance draws on tools from the Teaching and Learning Toolkit, produced by the EEF in partnership with the Sutton Trust.

The Programme

The programme is designed to consider evidence based guidance and its practical application to ensure teaching assistants are deployed effectively to raise outcomes for the children. It addresses three main strands and seven recommendations, drawn from the EEF publication ‘Making the Best Use of Teaching Assistants’, and explores how this learning can be used by schools.

The programme will include face to face training sessions, school based activity, plus the opportunity to work collaboratively with other schools involved in the project. Enquiry visits to other similar schools will be arranged and supported. As the programme is designed to encourage schools to rethink the roles of teaching assistants, a senior member of staff must be allocated as the strategic lead.

Schools involved in the programme will:

–         Have a commitment to sharing their learning with other schools to benefit all.

–         Engage with the research taking an enquiry approach and committing to collaboration

–         Work to ensure sustainability of practice by building capacity through new and innovative approaches

–         Be an ambassador for the EEF TA Campaign and demonstrate a commitment to developing excellence within this field.

–         Be open to self, peer and programme evaluation.

–         Invest the appropriate leadership and strategic resource to ensure whole school impact.

Aims and objectives of the programme:

–         To enable the school to review, rethink and reform the deployment and skills of teaching assistants.

–         To engage with the most up to date findings and research.

–         To help schools get the best value from TAs and ensure they make a meaningful contribution to teaching and learning.

–         To support schools to plan and deliver high quality training and development to support implementation of the recommendations.

It is important for the Headteacher/Principal/member of SLT to attend Day 1 with the strategic lead to ensure the school understands the commitment and resource required for success. The strategic lead will then be invited to attend future sessions with an identified member of staff.

Day 2 Weds 30th Jan 2019, 9.30am-3.30pm

Day 3 Thurs 23rd May 2019, 9.30am-3.30pm
